January in our Suburban Food Forest Garden

In the heat of summer, our harvest baskets this last month have been full of pawpaw, potato, pepino, zucchini, chilli, cucumber, eggplant and grapes...

In anticipation we’ve been watching many bunches of bananas become plumper by the day...

In excitement for getting backyard bees next spring, we’ve built a top bar bee hive...

In relief on hot humid days we’ve cherished the sound of falling rain,

And listened to the sounds of gentle workers creating healthy soil...

Wow, the garden's really growing down the bottom of your block! I'm really interested to hear how you go with the topbar hive - we're planning to build one and get some bees either this spring or the next.

Yeah the garden sure is growing - especially with all this rain! We're looking to get bees in the spring (we're a bit ahead of ourselves having built the hive already!) and will definitely do a post about that. The top bar hive has a lot of benefits for the wellbeing of the bees, and is quite simple to make. Will chat to you about bees soon!

Where did you buy banana trees from, and which type did you plant? I'm keen to put bananas in but not sure which variety best suits the Illawarra.

Hey Leisel, we got my bananas from bunnings and friends. We have a few different varieties but the best ones that we have trialled are the williams cavendish. Happy to sell you some if you like?

Yes please! Will email contact details. I have a perfect boggy patch near the sandpit that wants to be a banana and papaya garden :)

Hi Leisel.... although bananas like plenty of water they do require good drainage so you'll have to mound up the soil before planting them out.
