Bliss Balls

Recipes for really yummy, easy to make treats that contain no processed sugar, gluten or dairy, can be hard to come by. We stumbled across some yummy ‘bliss balls’ at a market stall while travelling up north a while back, and have modified the recipe to create our own yummy balls – and we’ve been asked for this recipe so many times, we thought we’d share it with you too. Now that oranges are in abundance, it’s the perfect time to make them.

Ingredients:

* Use organic ingredients where possible *

- 400g pitted dried dates
- 400g almonds or macadamias (or 200g almonds and 200g maccas)
- 5 heaped tablespoons of fair trade cocoa powder
- Juice of 1 small orange (and a little rind grated, if organic, for extra orange flavour)
- Desiccated coconut for coating

Equipment:

- Food processor

Steps:

- Place dates in a bowl and cover with hot water (almost boiling). Leave to soak for 15 minutes.

- Grind the nuts in a food processor, until of a fine consistency. Take them out and place in a bowl.

- Take the dates out of the water and blend in the food processor with the cocoa and orange juice (Save the soak water in case you need to add some if the mixture is too dry. It’s also good idea to squeeze the dates as you put them in to check there are no date pips in hiding in them).

- Slowly add the ground nuts until the mixture becomes firm enough to roll into balls that hold their shape. If they're still too gooey you could add some coconut, if they're too dry add some of the date water.

- Coat the balls in coconut and indulge then and there, or store in the fridge for up to a week. They also keep well in the freezer (not sure for how long, as ours never hang around long enough to find out!)

Enjoy!

These look good, I think I'll give them a go with the kids who will hopefully enjoy eating them as much as they'll enjoy making them.

i think you guys should add a recipes section to this website.

your garden is such a great inspiration, however it's really wonderful to know how you guys integrate the produce you grow into homecooked meals.
