'Plants were designed to be the intermediate between animals and the soil. The only reason we source our minerals from a bottle is because the minerals in the soil are depleted' - Phyllis Balch, nutritionist

We’ve been busily spreading locally produced ‘Remin’ rock dust of late, as a key way to improve the health of our soils – and hence our plants and ourselves! This rock dust is basically rock like basalt which has been finely ground to a powder. In this powdered form, microbes in the soil can easily break the rock down into a form that is then available to plants. Rock dust makes a whole range of vital elements and trace minerals available to plants, increasing their health, nutrient value and yield – check out http://remineralize.org/ for more insight into the amazing benefits of mineralising your soils.

We spread out about 120kg of ‘Remin’ rock dust all around our yard. Ideally you’d dig it into the soil, but because we had such a large area to cover and established ground covers, we just threw it around by hand and then watered it in.

To find out more about where we got our ‘Remin’ rock dust from, see: http://www.remin.com.au

Healthy soil = healthy people. All living organism are composed from soil, or minerals from which the soils are composed of. This is very simplified statement, but in short this is where we get our basic elements for our bodies. Soil is more then just minerals though. It contains many living organisms that help to convert minerals and organic matter to nutrition for plant life. Plants are the food of the next food chain, animals and the human predator is the top of the chain. Anything unhealthy below will cause ill health to humans. Our current agricultural practices do not support health. We have degraded soil to holding medium, force feeding plants with chemicals, now we even change the genetical structure. As a result our bodies are starving even most are obese. We need to come back to the old methods of growing food, mainly growing it ourselves. Getting rid of manicured lawns and putting fruit trees and vegetable gardens in instead. Have chooks. Every back yard, even a balcony can grow some food.

Thanks for the feedback Paul, we couldn't agree with you more. Backyard food production and supporting local organic, sustainable farming is the way to go!

After reading your post the other day, I rang Remin and stopped by on the way home to pick up a bag of rock dust. They are really nice people, and showed me around their vegie patch. They get carrots and onions weighing 1.2 kg! Let's hope this magic dust works as well for me :-).
