Eco Chick Retreat
With cosy sleeping quarters, a spacious area for scratching around amongst green prunings, their own water tank and a five star eco rating (all made from recycled materials of course!) we’ve got chickens and ducks from across the country signing up to get in to our newly built chicken house!

At the moment the likely lucky girls selected for the spring housewarming party are (drum roll please!)….two silky chooks (charming nature and gorgeous fluffy factor), two Australorp chooks (strong work ethic and impressive laying abilities), and two Khaki Campbells ducks (sweet nature and reputation as good small backyard garden companions). They’ll be our first backyard ‘girls’ so please let us know of any advice, recommendations of different breeds to go with, or locals from whom we could get our lucky girls – thanks!

Not sure if you got my last post. Dapto Poultry Club. We have 3 pekins for the cute/kid friendly factor, they're not huge layers. Looking at getting some bantam Australorps or Orpingtons maybe to balance out the flock. A few breeders around here have Rhode Island Red Bantams, and there's some more breeders up Bargo way if the guys down here don't have what you're after.
Hi Meryl,
Thanks for your suggestions! No we didn't get your last post sorry. We'll have to get in touch with Dapto Poultry club when we're ready to get our girls, which still won't be for a while yet. Pekins are so cute aren't they, but the silkies have one us over with the cuteness factor! Australorps are great, we got some Australorps for the North Wollongong PCYC community garden from Mark Hollis near Robertson (Phone:0428 301 534). He also sells Rhode Island Reds and Sussex - if anyone's is interested just give him a buzz and see who he has waiting for a new home!
Hi Alison, it's ray here, I replied to your argon question re your PV meter. With our chickens we found them turning into 'butch hens' and sort of starting to crow on early summer mornings. This made neighbours unhappy - we now lock them (chickens - not neighbours) in a darkened roost of a night which shuts them up until we let them out.
Hi Ray,
Oh dear, that's no good to hear your chooks were getting off to an early start making noise - what kind of choooks are they? Just goes to show the need to be adaptable and flexible hey - sounds like you have come to a good solution keeping them in a darkened roost until you are up to let them enjoy roaming.
Thanks!
